ANXIETY,
DEPRESSION AND THE MMPI PROFILES ON END-STATE RENAL (ESRD) DISEASE PATIENTS

A descriptive analytical study has been conducted to patients with end-state renal disease under maintenance haemodialysis. To know about the rate of anxiety, depression and also the correlation between some demographic characteristics and personality profiles. The study was made on population sample of Hasan Sadikin Hospital and Dialysis Clinic patients with ESRD during May 1995 to June 1995. This study was initiated base on the fact that patients with ESRD are coping with lifelong and totally dependent on a machine controlling their well being. There are many psychological issues said that anxiety about death and depression are common. Anxiety and depression was examined on 61 patients using Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). This study found that 18% of patients suffered from mild anxiety mixed with mild depression, 5% suffered from mild anxiety with moderate depression, 6% moderate anxiety with moderate depression, 18% mild depression, and 2% mild anxiety. Actively working patients were lesser suffering from anxiety and depression significantly (p<0.005) compared with non-actively working patients. The results of the MMPI on 36 patients with ESRD showed that patients with anxiety-depression differ significantly and very significantly from patients without anxiety-depression (p<0.05 and p<0.005).
